Remote Capture? - 06-05-2007, 04:17 PM

Has anyone had any success with remote capture software?

Im currently giving the Breeze Systems DSLR Remote Pro a trial run. Its actually VERY cool, but what Im not overly thrilled with is its limited functionality to name images as you capture them.

Next, I tried Canon's free Capture program, but it has to run thru the ZoomBrowser EX program, and im not having much luck making that happen.....

Nevertheless, i wondered if anyone has had good luck with any method.

As ive mentioned - im going to Africa to shoot 1,500 - 2,000 orphans and being able to shoot straight to a laptop would be ideal.

Thanks in advance!!
~blon

I've never really done remote capture before but I always read about Capture1 software products. Seems every time I read an article about the big name photogs doing this, they are using Capture1.

I have use the remote capture function in Capture One before. It work pretty smooth. And you can set up the name also.

Okay, I'll be the idiot here and ask what you're talking about when you say, "Remote capture". Are you talking about tethering your camera to a computer and having it download directly to the PC as you shoot?

Hey thanks all i really appreciate it. I was unaware of Capture One.

@ Wes -> yeah bro, thats what Im refering to. I want to have an 'X' on the ground for the children to step on - and have the camera ready to go so that all i have to do is remotely capture the image with the file naming I have setup. It can capture directly to the PC so i dont even have to mess with card transfer.

Try your EOS Utility program before you invest in Capture One.

Also, if you have a scanner connected to your PC while trying to connect your Camera.., there seems to be a conflict one cannot get around.

Try turning off any other imaging devices, reboot, then launch the EOS utility and connect to your camera.

I've used the EOS Utility on both Mac and PC with no problems, very easy to use.

Yes Wes it is and for some reason Canon seems to have more problems then Nikon. No this is not a Canon / Nikon dig. I just completed (May 19th) a 22 month program at the Center For Digital Imaging at Boston University and 3 students shot Nikon while the rest shot Canon, about 10. Half the Canon shooters had problems at one time or anotther during the program when they tried to shoot tethered.

I think it was also MAC driver related, but as I have PC's I'm not 100% sure. I just remember otehrs asking about software and driver updates.

hey guys - quick update....... I tried capture one and wasnt all that impressed. Not only that, inside the program the 'Capture' button is disabled unless you have a Phase One digital back. No luck there.

Learning about the Canon Utility, I decided to actually look at the software that came WITH my camera...... woops.

Anyway, after looking for a solution all week - it seems that the Canon program is going to be EXACTLY what i need.

Primarily, the beauty of the Canon program is the ability to edit all the IPTC fields on the fly.

Again, thanks every one............ HOWDY HEATHERLOU!!

I found this thread very informative! I had wondered about remote capture myself, I'm glad to know that I already have the software, now I need to play with it.

I'd love to hear about this trip too!

WELL HELLO TO YOU TOO!!!!

Well........as for Africa.... Im leaving Monday (June 11th) to spend two weeks photographing each and every orphan across 5 or 6 different orphanges. I read through the agenda today and over two weeks I calculated 1,870 orphans - and they anticipate its probably more than that.

If any of you saw the "American Idol" episode where they did the fund raising effort for Africa........... this is pretty much what I'm going down there to do. (and i had to raise my OWN funds LOL)...... The goal is basically to bring awareness to the oprhans who need sponsoring. Of course, my role will also be to photo-document the work thats being done there too so i have a big job ahead of me.

I'll be in Rwanda for a week, and Uganda for the second week. Im reaaaaaaaallly looking forward to it.

Of course I'll post photos upon my return.....but thank you so much for asking.......
Blon
