What is this? - 06-08-2007, 08:37 PM

While I was taking some photos yesterday, I noticed a "halo" looking light ring in my images on the LCD. I was shooting with a 70-200 4.0L, and was getting the same light ring regardless of whether I was shooting in direct light or in the sun. I tried both with and without the lens hood and got the same results. Here are the images in picasa. It shows the same pattern in all of the frames.

Here's what it looks like full size.

Any thoughts?

Stange. I've never seen that on film so I don't know if it is the lens. Not sure about digital. I mean, is it in the sensor, electronics, or lens? Did you change lenses to see if it was happening in the camera? Has it done it since that day?

Darren, Did you ever figure this one out? I'm curious since I don't have a clue what would do this.

Well, I shot some more this afternoon and everything looks good again. I cleaned everything I could (lens and inside the camera). I suspect that it was something on the lens glass...closest to the camera body...since it looked pretty dirty. I've been doing a lot of swapping out lenses and experimenting while shooting, and things have been getting dirty pretty quick.

Thanks for the hints and interest.

When I first got my Digital Rebel, my first SLR, I went on a trip to Wash. DC. When I looked at many of my shots I had what looked like a bugs leg that went top to bottom and was at varying angles. Not all my shots had this. I finally figured out that I often take off my glasses when I shoot. I would hold them in my left hand which cradled the lens and the stem for the ear piece was getting in front of the lens.

That wasn't your problem, but glad it seems resolved.

Little confused... were you shooting digital or film. If it was film it is most likely light leakage or damage to the film from being put through an xray machine like at the airport. (Had something similar happen with my graduation pictures, but thankfully not to all of them!) If it was digital...you've got me.

Just to clarify, it was with my Digital Rebel. When I first noticed it, the sun was pretty strong to my left, so I thought it 'might' be some kind of lens flare. I put the lens hood and got the same thing. The arc stayed in the same place in frame on every shot. In fact, when I shot with the camera oriented in portrait, it appeard like a rainbow.

Going back again, I can see it on some photos taken with other lenses (I hadn't caught that before) so it must have been in the camera. Anyway, after a quick cleaning, it's all good.

Took this last night.
