Monitor calibration -- options? - 06-22-2007, 09:11 AM

It's been a while since I researched this. What is the best software/hardware to buy, that is cheap.

I think last I checked into it, you couldn't get this done for less than $150. Is that right?

Any recommendations?

Arthur,

There aren't really any cheap options as in the $150 range. There has been a lot of consolidation in this field with Spyder, Gretag McBeth, etc. all now owned by the same company. The Gretag McBeth One-Eye is a good system. Not sure what is costs at present, but most likely in the $300 to $400 range. Also, check out Monaco.

You might check around and see if anyone on the Forum would provide this as a service to you. If they have a spectrophotometer, they would be able to color calibrate your entire system - camera, monitor and printer.

I have the Monaco and it works fine. Bought it at a seminar and don't remember what I paid for it.

There is the Huey for less than $100. I've read good things about it but haven't used it. I have an older Spyder that I use.

As is often the case, I'd be weary as you get what you pay for. This may be a better solution though than nothing, if you don't want to spend $200+.

I got the Gretag McBeth Eye One For $140ish at Fort Worth Camera, it works great, I can actually see a difference in the before and after shot.

Gretag Eye-One (name may have changed) can be had for under $150 if you shop around, and it's excellent.

I use the Spyder2PRO, and it works like a champ. The three biggies are all good though.

I moved from the Spyder 2 Pro to the Eye One. The Eye One display 2. There's a heck of a difference IMHO. But... the Spyder 2 Pro isn't a bad way to go either.

Arthur,

I have Spyder2Pro and I use it to calibrate all the monitors in the house:) Works great. I don't remember how much it is, somewhere in the $200-$300 if I remember correctly...

Best regards,
