Fix Blown-out sky - 06-27-2007, 01:29 PM

I want to make some prints for family in the photo. I totally blew-out the sky, is there a way to fix the blow-out? I have CS2 and would like any steps that you would take.
The shot looks a little distorted from the re-sizing for web

You could always go outside and get a good image of some clouds, than mere them with your print in CS2/ CS3. My 5 min fix below, not perfect, just to give you an idea. Off camera flash meter for sky is how I go about those.

Or you could add a color gradient layer to the top and mask out the heads (quick and dirty attempt):

Tom,
Would this be done with a mask layer?

Yes.

Create a new layer on top of your image. Choose the color of the sky you want, and paint a gradient to taste.

Then apply a layer mask, and paint away! Not perfect, but it's one solution. My example may be too vivid a "sky blue", but you get the idea.

Nice edit, Tom. What I like about this is it allows you to be as creative as you desire. I still have so much to learn about PS. :-)

Here is a try I did. I like how it came out, but don't think I like the sky color. Does anybody have the natural sky color? Or maybe how can I add some clouds back in?
Tom - Thanks for your help
David - Very good tutorial

I like this one much better

I think I was wide open on aperture, If I would have stopped down and underexposed would that help?

Exposing for the sky and using fill flash probably would have yielded acceptable results.

I'm at a loss to figure out how to get a deep blue sky without all the aftereffects. Anyone have any ideas?

Try a CP filter when shooting. That will help a bit.
