Fireworks question (I Know it's late) - 07-05-2007, 11:26 PM

So now that I have shot another years worth of fireworks photos, I have a question:

What white balance setting should the camera be set with?

I personally shot with a daylight kelvin temp dialed in (5300 if I remember correctly) but when I got them home and started looking, I realized that wasn't all that great.

I then dialed around some of the presets in AdobeCameraRaw, and ended up settling on auto and to my surprise it came out on the screen the most like what I remember seeing in real life.

In the shots that I was taking, there were several light sources that were playing on the effects -- there were some sodium vapor street lights (the orange kind) and some of the bluer kind (don't know what they are), there were car headlamps and taillights too, and then there are the firework colors that reflected on the water.

So faced with all of these sources, my thinking was to go with something close to normal film, and then deal with it in post.

What have been your experiences, and choices in the past, and what will you do in the future?

I shot all mine in RAW, so it didn't really matter, but in post processing I used the Tungsten setting. There were numerous street and building lights between the fireworks and the camera and they cast a yellowish tint into the image. It was slight, but did change all of the colors in the image.

I shot JPEG in Auto, or Tungsten.
