replace background - 06-26-2005, 12:32 PM

How would I replace the background in this image with white, while leaving the shading so it wouldn't be so totally fake white? I only have PSE, but if anyone can do this in CS it probably works similarly. There's something about this photo I like, but not with the khaki. It's too drab. I'm sure the answer here is a mask -- something I have never done before.

Jeannie, in case you read this I have not (yet) attempted to re-do my other pic with your instructions. I figured this one is different because I don't have 2 photos? I might work on it later today. Your instructions seemed easier to follow than something I tried in the past!

I did this version in CS with just a selection, then i adjusted the saturation.
I then cloned out the part on the left of the pic.

Thanks Kenny, it didn't occur to me to adjust the saturation. I'll try that out and see if I can get to be more of a brighter color.

Here it is again with the same steps just adjusted the brightness some. I would have done this the first time but i was thinking you didnt want a pure white background.

I guess I wanted something white but with a little texture or shading. That's tough to manufacture but I still like what you did. Thanks!

Of course, nothing less for the princess! The princess who HATES the camera, hehe. I find some of my best shots of her happen in the kitchen when she is waiting for something yummy. And she's too excited about the prospect of food to give me the evil eye....
