Here's a couple of threads from balloon events. I have used everything from a fisheye to a 70-200. All depends.... There are just so many ways to work one of those events!

Yes I'm in NY, they are having the festival in NJ.

Canon 18-55 (I have never used it Because I hate it)

Cool that you asked this.. I was looking at maybe heading over to houston end of Augugt for a ballon festival by NASA....

and if you really hate that 18-55... I'd be happy yo take it off your hands for you... as long as you wanted to give it away.. lol

I shot balloons in NJ last summer, great opportunity! I shot some with my 10.5mm fisheye and 300mm, but the best shots were with the 70-200 VR & D2X. The wind brought the balloons right over me for the "Hound Chase". If you shoot the "after-glow", don't forget to set your white balance on tungs. and then back to daylight after the show is over. Your EF 100-400 could work also, but only if it's a clear day. There was haze from a fire when I was there last year, the f/2.8 and monopod came in real handy. I got some full balloon shots in flight where you can read the "N" number on the side of the envelope. Polorizing filter was pretty useless early in the morning. Put up some pictures when you return home. Good luck!!! & Great shooting!!!
