Help with low light church - 08-12-2007, 12:09 AM

Photographing my first baptism tomorrow and I need help. I usually bounce the light but the ceilings are way to high. I have a 30d and 430ex--do I shoot it directly at them or 45 degrees. What about my sto-fen can I leave it on if it is straight on?

can you take a tripod?

1600 at 1/15 with some fast lens might be acceptable if you use a tripod.

What's your fastest lens? a 1.4 or 1.8 should work at 3200 with maybe some Noise Ninja.

Here's a lot of church shots all done with available light and High ISO's.

Use the Stofen on AV and take a couple of test shots if possible first.

Don't use the Stofen straight on unless you have to. Tilt it up, 45 degrees or more. I used mine straight ahead and didn't even like the results.

ask the church officiant if it's ok to use flash.

many of them prefer that you do not use flash during the religious ceremony.

i have shot in many a low-light church and have never had to go any higher than about 800 iso with my 2.8 lens. they aren't caves! people do need to be able to see when they are in church.

watch your white balance.
