Several books touch on this, but I am curious to know what you all think:

What are your favorite camera settings, or the settings that you set and forget?

What are the settings you "play" with the most?

Depends on what I'm shooting. I tend to do almost everything in full manual mode. For example, when shooting motocross in bright daylight I'll set to ISO400, 1/2000 or 1/2500 on the shutter, and somewhere around f/5.6 to f/7. In studio it would be ISO100, 1/100, f/8 (or therebouts).

I like to shoot people at very wide apertures 2.8, 4 for portrait type stuff then groups bump it up to F9 and landscapes even higher. It also depends on the lens. I also shoot aperture priority 90% of the time.

I shoot everything RAW so in camera settings for me I don't really change that much.

I shoot aperture priority 99% of the time. The settings I change most often are ISO and aperture. I also shoot jpeg most of the time, mostly out of laziness. ;)

If you like to cheat you can put the camera in aperture priority and look at your settings and then go back to manual!

Best thing is to practice in the sunlight, afternoon, dark, night, indoor and everywhere you can for experience!

Do not forget about fill-N-light (flash) if you need it.

Later,
A

I always shoot manual. As others have said it depends on what I'm shooting and what look I'm going for. I shoot lots of bike races and other sporting events, and the amount of light changes in different parts of the course or field, and in different weather (cloudy vs sunny, etc). The changes I make are ISO, shutter speed, appeture, and white balance. I shoot raw for some things and jpeg for others. I pretty much never "set it and forget it". I guess my answer is (as it is for most photography questions), "it depends".

Hey Wes, just wondering why the high ISO in bright daylight? Is it needed or just something you like ?

I think he uses long lenses. Am I wrong?

I tend to shoot primarily in Tv mode...but that is slowly changing. I can see that I'm moving either to full manual or at least to Av mode.
