The light was low, the hit ratio was low as well. All shots using ISO1600 & 30 f1.4 lens.

If the dance involves moving fast for the kids, an f1.4 lens would be critical to get any kind of motion freeze. Take lots of shots, shoot RAW and do not hesitate to go ISO 1600.

If the light is semi decent at your event, or the kids do not move too fast, then a f2-f2.8 lens just might cut it. ( I use the 35f2 as often as I can as it shoots much better than the 30 wide open, but that 1 stop of 30 is becoming rather critical player)

Alot of times you can use the flash during the dress rehearsal...or at least they have always let us..of course we aren't very professional!!! Some look good, but some actually look better without the flash as the mood looks better without the lights in the way. I use the 5D with the 70-200 2.8 and it works...but I shoot RAW too...it helps you recover those "lost" shots.

You should be able to push the ISO up on that 30D.
Some noise actually makes the shot look more artistic and fits well with dance genre.
I think your 85 will be fine. with a 1.6 factor you're working at 135 (old school) which is a very nice distance.
You should be able to get closer since you are going to look like the professional photographer.
Spot meter is your friend.
