I've never used a polarizing filter... I tried today and my pics came out not so good... they were pretty dark.... What is the correct way to use one?

first, decide if it will do anything. Make a 'pistol' with your right hand. 'aim' at the subject, and if you can make your thumb point at the sun by rotating your wrist, it may help.

Or you can buy a set of polarized sunglasses and check it that way. I do....

Assuming you have a circular polarizer (most autofocus camera require a CP, but many places try to sell you the other kind, your manual should tell you) after determining by one of the above methods that a polarizer will help, as you view the scene thru the viewfinder, rotate the outer ring of the filter to see the varying effect it has. It will change from no effect to a strong effect. When you like what you see, take the pic.
