PS2 - Changing my RAW File Extension??? - HELP!!! - 07-10-2005, 11:15 AM

OK I just installed PS2 and started working on my first wedding, I have four different camera files and did my normal workflow:
Flagg the images from each camera, move all flagged images into one "flagged" folder. However in order to do this, I batched renamed 2 camera files since some of the image files were the same as the other camera before I moved them all into one folder. Now here is the problem. I can read all the images with CS2 Bridge, they open up in RAW Viewer just as always, I can adjust anything I need too but when I try and open the files up in PS2 it give me an error saying it is a messed up jpg. When I look at the images on my computer outside of CS2 it shows the main image as a JPG with an added small image file with an extention of .XMP. Now I can not do anything with these images, no program I have will open them. I can only view them with the Bridge.

WHAT HAPPENED?

I have all the files backuped so that is not a problem but being my FIRST wedding to work with I am quite scared this will continue. Any suggestions?

OK...one thing at a time.

The "XMP" file is the "sidecar" file that is tagged to the file and has "metadata" about it - including original names, settings, etc.

The renaming, it won't automatically change it for you, but you have to be careful with the dialog and build the file name correctly. Make sure you keep the "original" extension. I'm sure you did, but that's the ONLY thing I can think of. I'm always paranoid when I use the batch rename - specially when moving from one folder to another - and pay careful attention as I build it to the "new name" it displays at the bottom.

Just thought of one other thing. If your rename is part of an action you have - instead of using the menu - it's quite possible the syntax has changed with "Bridge" and it may have messed things up for you.

Thanks Jesus, that was the first thing I thought of also. I had been chnging some JPG files in Batch Rename but I did remember to change it back to "same extention" before hitting the go button. I batched renamed everything again and I think it is going to fix the problem but adding the CR2 file extension to the 20D files. I still have no idea what happened here, just another reason why to ALWAYS back up your files before messing with them on the computer :) Kinda makes me fell good in a sick way, I spend all that money on backups to backups and they finally paid off :)

Yes...funny you say that. I just completed my weekly work machine backup! It's a notebook, so every week, I put in a second hard drive and I do a complete Ghost (complete hard drive image) from one to the other. If my drive ever crashes, I just replace the drive and I'm set to go. If I've had a busy week (a lot of new documents or activiy), I'll do it twice during the week.

At home, I've learned my photo backup routine from you!

By the way, welcome to PSCS2. It's pretty nice (specially the Raw converter - not so keen on Bridge yet...it's cache has gotten messed up a couple of times for me and every time you rebuild it, you lose your ratings!)

I actually have a second copy (full version, shrink wrapped) that I'll be putting up for sale when I return from vacation.

FWIW...If the files are still on the memory card, why not try to repeat the save and watch and see if the same thing happens again. It may have been some kind of a fluke that wont be repeated. Just rename the folders the first batch is in. and do it again...
