I have been reading a book "understanding Digital Photography" by Bryan Peterson. Some things have been good, some interesting (forget you histogram and don't ever look at it????

Here is the note about a photo with shoe prints in the sand" the intenstity of texture is increased a hundredfold when thtat texture is sidelit. Somethiing as simple as footprints in the sand along a shoreline take on a lifelike feeling when sidelit by the low-angled light of the setting sun. "

Nothing wrong with the shot. It could, however, be improved with some processing. A correction in white balance, a bump in brightness and contrast, and an increase in saturation would do wonders (also, straighten the horizon just a tad). I took it through ACR doing all of this, and it was an improvement. However, I won't post it since you say "no" to others editing.

I would only change the white balance if you want it to feel warmer. As it is, it looks like a cold beach at sunset. When I think sunset, I don't think warm, I think cold. Apart from a slightly misaligned horizon, it looks perfect to me.

I have to scroll to see the whole image...is that just me or is that the way it is?
I have this happen on pictures once in a while. So I don't know if I can appreciate this picture properly, I notice it on this image in particular because of its effect.

Maybe it's just a personal preference on composition but I don't think the sky adds anything and it pulls my eye away from the subject all the way at the bottom of the photo. I suspect there was something that disturbed the sand close to the print but it seems to crowd the bottom of the photo. I'd prefer a little more space to balance the photo, either by stretching the canvas or including more sand and cleaning up any imperfections in PS. Having said that, great eye for an interesting shot. I really like it.
