I'm a recent convert to the digital world..
I bought a Canon 5D, love it, but have a question about the presets for Sharpening, contrast, saturation, etc..
I have been told that you should turn all the presets down as low as possible and make those adjustment in photoshop. Is that the way to go?
Thanks,

Not necessarily. Here's why; The picture styles that available in the Camera's menu affect the output of JPEGs (if you are shooting in jpeg) and what you see on the LCD when you are reviewing images on the Camera LCD. They only affect RAW images if you process your raw images in DPP.
If you are a new digital shooter and plan on shooting in Jpeg to start with, you should use the picture styles default settings to start and change them when you see something lacking your images. Turning all the settings down will usually make for a poor quality jpeg. Most jpeg shooter actually turn up the sharpening, contrast and saturation to get a jpeg that 'pops' with minimal post processing.

I agree with Ken. If you shoot JPG, play around with the Picture Styles. I shoot RAW and pretty much don't mess with the the Picture Styles too much... Although, I do choose Neutral to start from.... Depending on the RAW Processor, it may or may not effect the way it interprets the initial RAW rendering.

I shoot RAW and I use DPP so I actually like using the picture styles.
It saves me time later and the pictures on the back of the camera's LCD look a lot closer to what I get.

DPP is not perfect by any means, but I'm getting use to it.

Thanks Andy.. I haven't checked that out yet..
I have been just going straight to photoshop. Switching from film to digital has been a bit overwhelming for me, its so much to learn at once. :-)
Thanks again, Beth | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
