If you are going to do this, I would do the rest of the tats on the arm and hand as well. Maybe add the eyes to tie it together.

Thanks for the quick feedback! The other tats on his are are black, with no color - meaning his skin color shows instead of any additional color - that's why I didn't do those others as well.

I'm not that big on the selective coloring thing, but I bet your client would like this.
You did a good job on it.

I really like selective coloring myself...but I don't like it with this photo, because it seems to take away from the baby, instead of add to the photo..

I'm about half and half. I think that the selective color has been over used. However, I think there are time when it works.

The most important question is if the client likes it or not.

I don't understand the point of the selective coloring here. Whats the significance of selecting the tats? In some pictures, I think it works very well. This one just seems arbitrary to me.

And that's the problem with selective coloring... the image has to really call for it, otherwise it does seem arbitrary.... that's why I voted whatever....

I like it but think it may look better if you boost the saturation on the color a little more. and maybe make the black ones have a little more punch to them too.

I have to agree that the focus of the pic is supposed to be the baby and the color keeps stealing that focus.

I think I disagree. If the focus was purely meant to be the baby, what's the point of having the arm. I think the focus to me is the soft/hard contrast between and innocent newborn and the strong, "experienced" male arm. I think having color in the tats helps highlight this contrast, but needs to be balanced by color on the baby.

BTW, my eyes tend to follow the arm up to the baby's eyes. So I don't see this as a distraction. My biggest problem is the appearance of the disposable diaper.

I do like the selective color effect on some images. I agree with others that it doesn't work with this particular image. The color doesn't show up that well. I had to look closely to see the effect. Plus, the flames and skull kind of put a "devil baby" edge to it. Just my thoughts.

Wow - some awesome feedback here! I love it! Just another point made that photography is art - and it can all be in the eyes of the beholder(???). Anyhow - this dad is a pretty outgoing, off the cuff, fly by the seat of your pants kinda person! He is a super nice guy and a BLAST to hang out with! He is a local DJ here in DFW, which by the way, he came from Houston a year ago! Check out his myspace page (kind of hard to read to me though)!

We did several shots without the diaper, but mom said she felt like it was gonna blow any minute - and dad didn't want to take the chance! He is very proud of his skin-art and loves to showcase it. Thanks again all for all the feedback - I love to hear all the different angles on one image!

Jake~
