DOF calculator for Windows Mobile devices - 02-19-2008, 12:55 PM

A while back, I wrote a DOF calculator for Windows Mobile Smartphones. At the time I released it I had planned to add some additional features in the near future; but I never got around to it.

I've finally found some time to work on some changes, and have a new version called DepthCalc that's available for download.

Improvements from the previous application include:
  • Ability to customize the list of apertures displayed in the DOF table by choosing a range of apertures as well as whether to display full stops only or also display half or third stops.
  • Navigation and data entry shortcuts to make it possible to use the program with only the directional arrow keys, for users with PDA-style devices so they don't have to open up the keyboard if they don't want.
  • More accurate math, the aperture values used for DOF calculations are calculated by raising the square root of 2 to the appropriate power.
  • Appliation is now better behaved on screens that can switch between portrait and landscape mode

For more information, and to download the application, click here

So far I've only tested it on a touch-screen PDA phone, but it should also work on regular Smartphones without the touch screen.

I've posted version 1.1.1 for release. It's probably a good idea to uninstall the previous version if you already have it installed.

------------------------------------------
Version 1.1.1, Feb 24, 2008
------------------------------------------
- Added menu option to choose between feet or meters for distances.
- Fixed screen layout problems on non-PDA Smartphones.
- Tweaked number handling to be more friendly to locales other than US English.
- Move settings file to program directory and rename to DepthCalc.Settings.txt

Jeff, Thanks for the caculator, I'm still learning photography and not clear on how the Hyperfocal distance works totally. Understand the 1/3 and 2/3'rds of the picture. And understand that the hyperfocal if the area that is in focus is referred to as the "focal plane".

In your caculator, if it shows the Lens=35mm, Distance=10ft
Caculates to:
F2.8 Near 9' Far 11.3'
And the Hyper= 89 what exactly does this mean.

The meaning is probably right in front of my eyes, but I haven't experimented or obtained the knowledge of Hyperfocal distance. Would you mind explaining.

Hyperfocal distance is a way to maximize DOF. When you focus at the hyperfocal distance, everything from half the hyperfocal distance to infinity will appear to be in focus.

In this case, focusing at 10ft gives you a DOF range from 9' to 11.3'. Focusing to 89 feet would give you a DOF from 44.5' to infinity.

Hope that helps,
