Tattoo Photos - 03-14-2008, 06:40 PM

Not sure if this belongs here and you can move it if it doesn't

but my lil sister just turned 18 2 days ago. *tear*
Anyways, she is wanting to get her first tattoo and i am going to go with her since the parlor is just a block away (maybe i can talk hubby into letting me get another...but that is offtopic) but the parlor wont allow camera phones and they told a customer the other day when i went in for a quote to put their camera away

i want to do some photos and i just need to know is there a way i can get the parlor to allow my camera in the studio while they are doing the tattoo?

Don't count on it. Its a liability they don't need. If something happens they donlt want any photos that could be used in court.

Take a point and shoot, I see pics of people getting tattooed all the time, I am sure if they think you are just shooting them because its her first, should not be a problem. Just ask first.

I would be leary of a shop that was worried about photos being taken... I mean why should they have anything to hide????

My b/f just got his first tat on tuesday and she let me shoot the whole thing.. would even let me know when she was don with a section so I could get the full progression. She only asked that I didn't use flash - or at least give her warning if I was going to. She has been blinded before with one and couldnt work for a while because she couldn't see.

I have his pics in a thread on here

agreed - if they don't have anything to hide, why would they care if you shot photos?

The reason that camera's typically aren't allowed in a tattoo parlor is that they don't want to have to deal with people taking HQ pictures of the original tattoo designs that are all over the walls.

Offer to give them prints if they let you shoot?

I've had no problems taking photos of my wife when she got her first, and a friend took pics of her second.

I'll be getting a new tat in the next few weeks, and the wife will be taking pics of that as it's done.

As a tattoo artist I can tell you why we don't allow cell phone cameras in the shop.
It is because of image theft as stated earlier. People will take pictures of our designs and go to other shops for price quotes . I am fairly certain if you ask the artist if it's okay if you take pictures of the tattooing they will be okay with it . It is their shop so they make the rules.
I was at an art and craft show last weekend at the Oak Valley Plantation in South Louisiana and saw a few vendors stop people from taking pictures of their products , but would pose with a happy customer who just bought a print. It's not much different.
