Not able to help this weekend, however, here are some tips.
1) Really open up that aperture on your lenses to throw the background out of focus.
2) Ensure to focus on the eyes (if they are not sharp, nothing matters)
3) Look for overhangs (i.e. porches, etc...) with dark or even colored backgrounds because the light coming in from the open part of the porch is the best around (i.e. directional and soft).
4) Shoot either in the evening, or in the morning if you are in the open since you get that soft directional light at that time.
5) If you shoot during the day, use either a reflector, or fill flash with a stofen (I will get hammered for this, but this is my technique since most will say a stofen doesn't help outdoors)
6) Really watch how the light falls on the face of your subject. This is the most important thing since no one cares about the location if the light on the subject is bad or not controlled well.
