Alternative Process Photography - 04-02-2008, 08:15 AM

I have become intrigued by alternative process photography-specifically the Vandyke process. I was curious whether anyone was aware of any workshops in the greater Houston area that cover this process. Any help would be appreciated. I bought the chemicals, have an Epson 2200 on the way, and I'm ready to begin-almost.

Have you tried the forums at Alternative Photography?

Google pops up a few but they are all on the East Coast.

I haven't been to any of their workshops, but I just got a catalog from Santa Fe Photographic Workshops, and it includes workshops called "Alternative Photographic Processes" and "Advanced Alternative Photographic Processes". So you could check with them. New Mexico's not too far away.

I have done Van Dyke on several occasions. I have also dabbled with Cyanotype, Paladium, Platinum, Albumen, Gum Bichromate, and Wet Plate. I have used real 8x10, 4x5 and 120 negatives with these processes along with digital negatives generated on a computer. I am far from an expert in any of these I will gladly attempt to answer any questions I can. Just pm me and I'll do my best to answer them

One day when I was searching for such things, GOOGLE turned up a group in Austin. There's a man in houston who makes 7x17 contact prints from 7x17 original negatives. I know he works in platimum/palladium. GOOGLE found him as well.

So, you plan to generate inkjet images on clear material and contact print with that? I've pondered that technique as a way to keep me from buying a 7x17 camera. Keep us posted on your progress. Share your results with us.

Wayne,
I have actually sat through Mark Nelson's workshop on making digital negatives and pallatium prints. If you have never heard of him. His process is revolutionizing the alt process area. If you want to try his technique, let me know and I can walk you through it. I have never seen the tonal ranges he produces in any other form.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. I'm really excited about this so I'll keep you posted here as I move along the learning curve. I suppose I can check with the Houston Center for Photography re: Workshops in Houston.
I did pick up on the Austin group and the web has a wealth of info but there's no substitute for actually seeing it done by someone experienced.

Ryan,

I saw Mark's website. He indicates he was going to give a workshop in the area but I haven't seen any notice. When/where did you attend?

I went through a private 3 dayworkshop with Mark and two other people. I did it about a month ago. Sam Houston State University brought Mark in, and I talked my way into attendance. Mark is a really nice understanding guy.

Is Mark Nelson the Texan who litterally wrote the book on digital negatives? I think I found his web page once. Is his book worth the price of admission?
