Shooting cars outside... help? - 04-02-2008, 02:00 PM

Hey all. I'm meeting up with a couple friends that want me to get some shots of their
cars with my new camera in a couple hours.

There's a lot of overcast, and there is no direct sunlight. Pretty gloomy outside..

What settings should I try to shoot with that will turn out the best results?

Thanks!

my best advice... pick another day... no setting on the camera with eliminate haze/fog or add sunlight... either that.. or work with what you have.

keep you apeture open to let more light in... use a meduim fast shutter so not too much light comes in... ISO100 or 200 should be fine.

Actually ...
An Overcast or Cloudy day is best for cars outside.
Been there done that.
You dont want glass and chrome relections from harsh sunlight.
And its real hard to shade reflections out.
Think about it and add pizazz with PS.

Personally for me I would rather wait on a sunny day and start shooting about 2 - 1 1/2 hours before sunset for any action or interior/motor shots. Then as the sun is setting you get the best golden hour shots, use a circular polarizer to tweak out the reflections and to add some more color to the scene. I typically take 4 hours for a full car photoshoot, but if its just for some quick posed pics I would just be shooting them around 7pm currently on a tripod long exposures. You can still take some awesome shots on a cloudy overcast day during mid day when the light is brightest, the light is nice and even but not nearly as fun as golden hour.
