Question Advanced Focusing for D300 - 04-17-2008, 11:14 AM

Anyone have any sage wisdom or know of any advanced online tutorials for the focusing system on the D300. I have a tendency to use it in Single Servo mode and Single Spot for focusing to get the focus right where I want by locking the focus in with the shutter and then recomposing. I'm finding that I'm loosing a lot of shots doing that (unless they are static portrait shots). I've gone through the Nikon tutorials, etc., but just need some pointers on when to go from 9 to 21 to 51 point autofocus and from spot to dynamic to 3D and when to switch between continuous and single-servo modes. I'm trying to do a lot more shots with movement and less static content.

Thanks in advance. -Travis

I have completely converted to the 'AF-ON' and continuous focus modes. Even for portraiture. There is a very good discussion on this subject over on the Nikon Cafe'.

The 51 point thing is killin me so I go CF like Mr. Watters and 9 point however my main targets are fast moving birds who can fool the AF with the tree branches they hang on so I keep a finger on the focus lock button full time.
NO doubt I am way off base here but till I learn the camera...

Scott, just read the thread on Cafe'. Awesome explanation. I'm going to give it a try. It'll be interesting to see if it works with the Dynamic 3D focusing--not that I'll use it often, would just like to know how :-)
