How did they.. - 05-20-2008, 08:15 PM

do this? I'm having trouble getting a shadow as harsh as this using various things i've found. I'm assuming my homemade gobo needs to be as close to the face as possible to get the harsh shadow but haven't had any success. Any help is appreciated!

That's a fantastic picture! I'm patiently waiting for someone to tell how it's done because I have no clue:)

I'm thinking photoshop. Her hands and the corner of her left eye seem painted in to me.

Hmm I thinking it isn't photoshop. Here are my test so far. The shadow's still not as separated or as clean as I'd like it but I think I'm getting close.

What if you tried a window blind. You know the kind you twist the stick and each tab opens. You could easily adjust the shadow thickness that way.

Well I don't have any idea how to pull this off. But, I agree, I think the "blinds" need to be VERY close to her. I don't know if moving the lighting source away or closer would make any difference but it might be worth a shot.
I suspect some PS was used to clean up the shadow edges a bit.

Looks like PS to me, shadows don't have color fringe, specifically Orange/Yellowish fringe, unless I'm mistaken.

The farther away and smaller the light source, the harsher the shadow.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say some of those shadows are literally painted on her.. with makeup or airbrush or something (physically, not in photoshop)

Here is how they do it.. there are less costly lights but this is what I could find fast. In the 70s' I would buy one from Southwestern and cut off the back end and mount a stuido strobe to it.

Think in terms of midday sun - small source - very far away.

I think Photoshop. I just read Creative Photoshop Lighting Techniques and they have one very similar to it but with an arched "shadow".
