Question Framing: Glass or no glass? - 05-26-2008, 02:51 PM

Do you frame your matted prints with or without glass? I realize glass helps protect photos and is the traditional way to do it, but is no glass an acceptable way?

Conservation Glass, either no-glare or glare. The only thing I know of which conservators do not cover with glass is fabric needle point.

...and canvas prints.

Use glass, it protects the photo and the mat.

John, I matted and framed a 20x30 metallic print without glass because I couldn't get the non-glare, specially coated conservation glass in a big enough size and the other glass really didn't do justice to the whole look I got using the metallic paper to begin with. It's hanging over the fireplace in a law firm conference room, so I'm not worried about people touching it and isn't exposed to direct sunlight. All that to say that it looks good as is, but if I could have gotten what I wanted, I would have put glass in front of it.

Actually a couple of years ago at the Kimbell's Picasso-Monet show there were a couple of Monet oils on loan by a Swiss collector which had a conservation glass about 4 inches off the canvas rather like a light box.

That would have been cool! I'd like to have seen that.
