Okay, I've used the search to no avail... why is this flare/reflection happening? How do I get it to not happen?

Lens hood, possibly remove any filters you may have (UV, etc). Shoot at slightly different angle to the light source.

Was there a filter on your lens? A hood?
Edit: Andrew's quick today. LOL

Lens hood on, UV filter on. I'll try it without the filter.

Okay...it's that simple. I've never had this happen before so the thought that it would be the filter never occurred to me.

be aware that with very bright lights, even shots with no filter can get this reaction. coated elements ($$) in the lens can help, but nothing is 100%.
aka "ghosting"

Sometimes using a multi-coated filter can help reduce that phenomenon, but not always.
Glad it wasn't something more bizarre.

It is not a reflection ...
It is a transmission of Scotty beaming Kirk down to the factory floor.
Sharp eye and quick on the shutter to catch this ...

My first question is can you see it through the view finder? If not, then you are going to have a hard time eliminating it.

I will take "What can filters do? for $500 please Alex"....
my take is a reflection off the front lens element to the backside of the filter.
The reflection is inverted and slightly skewed, so thats my take.
BTW, what are you doing aiming at the ceiling?

BTW, what are you doing aiming at the ceiling? | That's a great explanation... I hadn't figured how it could do it, but that sounds perfectly logical.
Oh, and I was playing around with exposure at work... that's why.

BTW lens hoods won't help when the light source is in the image, they only help when the light source is just outside the frame but is still hitting the front element.
