Firefox Color Management - 06-17-2008, 07:55 PM

Okay since Firefox 3 was released today, it is a color managed browser. But it is not on by default. Here is a add-on which enables it so you do not have to goto about:config and enable the color managed feature

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6891

If you do not want to login then just go to the developer's website
http://seanhayes.name/2008/06/16/color-management-04/

Here is a website to test and see if your browser is color managed.
http://www.color.org/version4html.xalter

And here is some info if you want to do it manually.
--To enable it you must set gfx.color_management.enabled to true (via about:config) and restart Firefox

Scott, you're kidding me right? Safari? I don't even use Safari on my Mac.

I use Sarafi only to check colors since it was the only color space aware browser before Firefox 3.

On the PC at least, Safari is not completely color managed. It recognizes embedded profiles in images, but it converts everything to sRGB rather than using your monitor profile. Not really much help for those with large-gamut displays. It may be different on the Mac though.

The only problem with FireFox's color management is that while images with embedded profiles display correctly, it seems that the color is off for other graphic elements and colors (ie page color, etc). I think they may actually be treating these elements as if they were in Monitor RGB rather than sRGB. This makes a lot of websites look ugly on non-sRGB displays.

Okay for us dumb technologically challenged folk how do you "add on" this add-on? I downloaded the zip and see and install file, but when I double clicked it my computer told me it couldn't open such a file. Do I just add these items to the "add-on" folder?

Hi my name is Jason and I am a computer dummy.

You can open your addon box under tools and drag/drop the xpi file that you downloaded into the add-on box.

Stanford either I am HUGE dummy or I'm missing something. That link takes me to the exact thing that I downloaded and that .xpi file is not included in that series of stuff :(. What am I doing wrong?

You are not a huge dummy at all. The directions were very succinct. If you will right click on the link he provided you and select "save link as" it will save a file called color_management_04.xpi on you machine. Once you have done that, click on tools and then click on Add-Ons. That will open a dialog box showing you all of your add-ons. Simply drag the .xpi file from a Windows Explorer window to the Add-Ons dialog box and FireFox will attempt to install it.

Hope this helps.

Doug

Doug unfortunately it didn't help. When I right click and did "save target as" (don't have a save link as option) it was going to download the entire zipped folder that I have already downloaded, which doesn't include that file unfortunately. Not sure what I might be doing incorrectly :(.
