Georgia Aquarium - 07-13-2008, 05:20 AM

I'll be visiting the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta on Monday. Does anyone have any tips about the best way to shoot? I'll be using a 18-70 probably with a polarizing filter. Is it better to take pix at an angle to the glass or straight on? I'm definitely a newb at this type of shooting. Any other hints/tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

If you can put your camera straight on the glass that may be your best option. Then you can use a flash. That has worked well for me when shooting through tanks.

The aquarium is stunning. Be aware that it has very tight security. You are photographed and have to go through a metal detector but it's worth it. The 18mm wide end should be ok but wider would be better. Put the lens up against the glass as suggested. It may be very difficult to do as it can be mobbed with visitors. The wildest part is the long glass tunnel at the bottom of huge tank with all types of marine life swimming over and around you. Try to shoot at the highest ISO with available light and with flash. Enjoy your visit there then go across the streeet to the Coca Cola Museum and drink exotic soft drinks they sell worldwide.

Was just there visiting my oldest and I shot at the aquarium. Bought a circular polarizer but I think in some places actually hindered me than helped. Especially in the Baluga whale tank. My pics had a weird color in spots. Maybe the tank glass is polarized already and my polarizer reversed? Maybe someone has the answer. Good tip about going full on the glass-except there there are many tiny hand prints!!!
Overall was it was fun and got some ok shots. If I was into that type of shooting more I would have taken more time to make sure it was right.

Here are some of the pix I got at the Georgia Aquarium. I wish I had the time to do a better job. I've heard the GAq is going to set aside times that photographers can go in. Thanks everyone for your help.
