texture help - 07-13-2008, 09:58 PM

I didn't find post related "how to" add textures? on PS Elements 6. Can anyone help? I've gone through the directions in PS, but don't find how to do it with the elements 6 if there is a way. Has anyone else used textures with this? Thanks, input and guidance appreciated:)

I'm not real familiar with Elements, so forgive me if these are stupid questions:
What is the limiting factor of Elements?
Why can't you do it the same way as PS?

Thanks for responding Jake. I assume it's probably the operator- rather than the program. It won't let me cut/paste a texture onto the other picture. For some reason when I use the lasso or rectangle to select-it doesn't allow me to cut/paste...I'll keep working on it and hopefully figure it out! Thanks:)

If you have the texture image open, can you not just drag it on top of your photo?

Normally I will have image #1(texture) open and image #2(my photo) open. Then I just drag image #1 on top of image #2.
Change the blend mode of the texture layer to overlay, soft light or multiply and then drop the opacity to 30-60%.

There's a few more steps, but I would think you should be able to do what I just listed in Elements, but I could be wrong.

Christie posted this link about textures in the video section that is very easy to follow.
You may have already seen it, but just in-case:

I'll keep trying Jake, It didn't let me drag/drop it. Thanks for the guidance-just wanted to test the waters on textures since I've seen so many cool ones! Thanks for the link-I'll check it out.

Hi Pamela,
Like Jake said, you have to use the "Move tool" (V). What I normally do is load both the texture and the image into the bin (in other words open both with editer). Then I resize the window within so that they are cascading. (The resize opetion is inbetween the minimize and close button within the photo, not for editer). I then use the "move tool". I click on the image I want to relocate (in your case the texture), hold down the button, then drag it on top of the other image. Once the cursor is on top of the destination image, the icon will change to an arrow, a small rectangle and a plus symbol. If all goes well, then the texture image will show up as a layer in the destination image. You have to drag to the image itself, and cannont (to my knowledge) drag the image to the icon of the destination image in the bin. I really hope this helps you. If you want, I can take a couple of screenshots and upload them to show you.

*EDIT* I put together a quick powerpoint to accompany what I explained up here. PM me if you would like me to send it to you.

Thank you Johan-I'm still practicing.. When I drag the texture-it covers the picture and doesn't blend. Are you using PS Elements 6? I've sent you a pm, and my email is idnurse41@att.net. Thank you again.

What you can do once its relocated, is change its Opacity (which is in the Layers window which is usually located on the right side of your screen unless you moved it) to make it blend in. If you look in the same area you can also click on the part that says "Normal" and choose something different. I don't know what this feature is called, but the option to Overlay is there. Hope that helps

I don't know about elements, in PS in your layer palette you would select your texture layer and in the palette top left next to opacity is your blend mode. The drop down options let you change from normal to soft light etc. then you can adjust your opacity. When using a texture on skin, with the text. layer selected lasso any flesh afterwards and use the gaus. blur filter.
