Racoon Eye's - 08-04-2008, 09:47 PM

Need some helpful hints, tried hitting the subject with a touch of fill flash. Guess I didn't adjust enough to remove the Racoon eye's. A reflector proably wouldv'e helped out tremendously. But when you're at the gardens bringing in additinal equipment, I tought they may charge a pro fee. Any suggestions on shooting... Thanks. I shot raw and can PP but I'd rather get it right out of the camera. Suggestion welcome please. Just noticed shouldv'e done something with her hands as well. Still learning.

Another tought on this was the angle of fill flash--now that I look it over. Camera was angled vertically with flash. Hince --left side of subject a little overexposed. I really want to learn AE-L. Can anyone give me the basic on shooting with Nikon

Wade a reflector would have worked, they do sell them small enough to carry without anyone really noticing, also you can use an umbrella to remove harsh light. One thing I noticed also is your focus is on her left foot and rock.

Thanks Mike....believe you're right on the focus. Must have had it on the 51pt and didn't notice. Thanks.

For a little fix in post... You could use the dodge tool in PS to bring out the eyes, or paint some brightness in using a Curves Adjustment Layer with layer mask. There's also the Shadow/Highlight adjustment method.

Layer mask in definately an area that I've haven't crossed over into fully. Understand how to create, but not quite clear on the total concept of using mask. Playing around with it now on CS3.
The dodge tool definatly helps out, I'm loosing the skin tone when using this process. Thanks

a reflector on camera right to bounce back some light into those eyes. maybe the flash off camera, or maybe even turning the subject in the other direction where she would have had her back towards the direct harsh lighting...just thoughts.

Thanks for looking...!

For dodging, set the Range to Midtones and Exposure to 10%. That should help.

I find the best way is to not shoot at noon ;-)...

But bringing in a reflector is a great option if you have someone or something to hold it. Off camera fill flash would also do the trick.

Well this is obviously a quick edit, but here is what I did.

If you like it I can explain what I did as it isn't quite as simple as a dodge.

Sure..explain. Took some of JohnT's advice and think I got it. But explain your technique to see if I'm on track. Yes.....Shooting at High Noon is terrible. Didn't have a choice out with the family and the only time we had. ....

If it had to be noon, and had to be in that exact spot, I like the idea for an umbrella (or a parasol) that Mike mentioned to create some shade. It's not just her eyes, but the skintones are also washed out because of the brightness and there are other odd shadows on her face. There's a reason this photography thing isn't always easy!

Ain't that the truth! I keep trying to tell a friend of mine that it's more than just "point and shoot," and no matter how sophisticated the camera, it doesn't simply "know" what you want.

Agree with you on the umbrella--hopefully I can get out there again soon to repeat shoots with family. Great Advice---I can use all I can get. Below is another Pic what would you have done different. Any helpful hints on using AE-L trying to master this.
