How can I add sun or moon into this image - 08-05-2008, 08:30 PM

I'm wondering if anyone can tell me how can I add the sun on the upper left side of this image? I'd like to show the sun, trying to break through the fog or the moon showing through the fog as the day ends.

I use Aperture, but I do have PSCS2 and CS3. Any help would be appreciated.

Filter Render Lighting - 08-05-2008, 09:20 PM

Angelo, Interesting question. I played around with Filter > Render > Lighting in CS3 and came up with this... Looks a little too intense.

These are the settings I used:
I probably should have toned it down a bit.

I'll play around with it some more just to see what I get.

Added: If you change the color to an orangy yellow, it looks more like the sun instead of the moon. Cool.

Here's the attempt at a sun. I used the burn tool to make some shadows.

Hopefully someone will come along that knows what they are doing, but this is fun in the meantime. I've never really played much with this Lighting filter.

Patti, I like it!
The yellowish one looks more natural, as if the sun is trying to break up the fog...
I've never used that feature in PS.
That is nice.....

Patti, how did you change the color to yellow/orange?
The only color buttons I could find in Render are the channel changes.

If you click on the little white boxes over on the right, they bring up the color chooser (that's what I call it anyway). I clicked on the top one.

Yes, you can do it with CS2. In fact, you can do it with PS 7.0 if you want.

Nice work Patti, and Daniel. I've played with that filter a few times, but I never thought of using it for something like this.

To put a story with the above photo, we had taken a gondola up one of the mountains near Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland. It was absolutely beautiful and above the clouds. We decided to walk down one of the stages and hit fog (into clouds) most of the way.

As we descended I noticed two farmers walking, looking for their strays before nightfall and took the photo.

Anyway, I thought those who see the photo would want to know the background to the photo.

I didnt see a moon added so here is my try...

Used a moon pic with gray sky. Added that picture in a new layer then set the opacity to 70% on the orginal... Than had to clone and heal the gray sky in the moon layer to blend it fully.

So now I can move the moon to where ever I want it :)

Patti, Daniel, John and Arlon,
These are all great. There's so much to learn. Thanks for teaching me the Render function in PS. But how did you clone the moon into the image?

What software did you use?

angelou- there are several ways to clone the moon into the photo.. you can try to select it and jsut drag and drop.. it will drop as anew layer into the new image, then adjust opacity settings.. or you can use the clone stamp assuming you have Photoshop (cs2 or cs3 both have it, im sure eariler versions tdo as well) also keep in mind when using the clone stamp that it has its own opacity function as well which can be VERY helpful when blending in a situation like this. not only acan you clone in the moon at lower than 100% opacity, you can clone fog OVER the moon at a lower opacity as it looks like Copper did.

Todays lesson: Opacity is your friend!

Heather, my grandson, non photographer, took a two-week photoshop course a couple of years ago in HS and helped me add a moon to the image, very similar to the way John mentioned.
I'm the kind of person that has to do something several times before it sinks in, so he promised to come by and help me learn it. I have PSCS2 and CS3 and know very little
how to use it.
Here's what he help me put together:
