Long distance remote shooting. - 08-09-2008, 09:33 PM

I would like a way to remotely trigger my shutter from say 50 ft away or even more. I shoot a Rebel XT and have a wireless remote, but it is only good out to about 15 ft and you have to be in front of the camera, or at least in that general area. A wired remote is made, but only has a cord of about 2 ft. Is there something out that that is longer or some type of wireless device that I am not aware of? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

With the right connecting cable a set of Pocket Wizards will do the trick. You didn't specify inexpensive

I use this remote timer/intervalometer

And this extension cord It has been long enough for everything I've wanted to do. Mostly I just put my camera outside on a tripod focused on a perch near my bird feeder. When a bird lands on the perch, I trip the shutter from my air conditioned, easy chair "perch" inside the house.

The extension cord is only 33 feet, but I guess you could get two???

I've enjoyed the intervalometer features for quite a few projects. We did some yard work recently and I set up the camera to take a shot every few seconds and then put it together as a movie. Not great, but for a first attempt it was okay. I hope to do more of this when a good opportunity comes up. My sister has a night blooming cactus I hope to capture this way.

Might be cheaper to go the Popper route though.

Patti

I bought a wireless remote from a Chinese eBay dealer for a friend of mine. It is supposed to work out to 100 yards. My buddy sent me a picture of himself standing over 50 yards away from the camera.

One of these: wirelss remote

There are others that are similar for $100+. I was skeptical that this one would work, but he reports that it's great.

I rigged up my Skyports to trigger a remote camera from well over 100 feet. The remote was about 30 feet past 1st base and I was over past third base. I would guess over 150 feet. When I fired my camera, it triggered the remote also (which was aimed at the first base area for pick-offs).
