Know there are photoshop smarts here. - 09-02-2005, 12:15 AM

Ok, I'm new to PS and have yet to be able to get a good book on it. Have tried to find some info on the net, but not really sure I know what I'm looking for. Even did a search here for "layers", but didn't find anything that went along with what I'm trying to do here.

I want to basically make myself a for sale poster type thing for my tractor. I have 4 different images that I want to layer into one. They are different sizes and such, and I want to add some text as well. I have sorta figured out how to pull each picture into seperate layers onto a main canvas, but when I do that, each picture is very small when pulled on the new canvas. I've tried resizing the picture before I pull it over, but it still comes across as the same. And I can't see anyway to resize the layered image that I pulled over. Everything I'm finding on layers basically is about manipulating a single image and duplicating, reversing, ect... the same image.

Am I going about this totally wrong?

I posted this to another forum I'm on, and someone told me ..

"Biggest thing I can think of is to make sure all the images are the same resolution, for example if your BG layer is at 300ppi, the images you put on top should also be 300ppi, otherwise when you put them on as a new layer...they are gonna get tiny and the BG layer is going to determine all the other layers resolution."

So, I went and retried a thing or two. I created a new canvas of 300ppi, and one of 100ppi. Both of them, when zoomed to 100%, had my pulled over layer images still the same size.

This is probably easy, I just have a hard time seeing the forest for the trees, sometimes. Thanks for any input

Select the layer you want to resize, menu Edit>Free Transform, drag the corners (hold shift key to maintain aspect ratio).

You may want to check out this Photoworkshop and Software Cinema site, they have free sample Photoshop tutorials (Quicktime Movies) that are very nice

Photoshop Tutorials

The have them available for a reasonable price also.

Have you looked at the book: Photoshop CS or CS2 for Digital Photographers by Scott Kelby?
Very nice book.

I looked at so many books at B&N, my head was spinnin! :) I had some suggested to me beforehand, but when I went to the bookstore, I couldn't remember the ones that were suggested. Since B&N is nowhere close to me, am just waiting for my next trip. Thanks for the site info and the book suggestion.

Real World Camera RAW is an excellent book, highly recommended for anybody shooting raw and using Adobe Camera RAW. Real World Photoshop CS2 isn't available yet; I've had it on pre-order for a while and the release date has been pushed back to the end of October.

Martin Evening has a CS2 book that a lot of people seem to like. His Photoshop CS book didn't really click for me, so I'm just going to wait for the Real World book.

I picked up a book called "Photoshop CS Quick Steps". It's pretty good and has lots of screen shots. It's put out by McGraw-Hill/Osborne http://www.osborne.com . I picked it up at Hastings for $9.99 (regular price $16.99). It's worth a look.

There's a CS2 version out:
http://search.barnesandnoble.com/boo...21330625&itm=5

I've got a copy and I have to say I like it so far.

Also have Bruce Fraser's Camera Raw for CS2 and that is really worth reading (the opposite of Ken Rockwell's view on life.)

I'll also throw my hat into the ring for Real World Camera Raw by Brice Fraser for anyone that uses ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) to convert their Raw images. It's an excellent book that goes into what all the adjustment do, how to adjust an image, and how to use the tools to improve your Raw workflow for lots of images.

OOPS! I was actually recommended the Real World CS version .. I was looking at the little flyer that came with CS2 with books on it, when I typed that. :)

Pushed back to Oct now? damn.

Ken Rockwell has given me so much info, but I disagree with him on RAW. Course, I'm a control freak. lol

Thanks for all the input. Love it when folks share what they know. Especially on the subject of PS, since I know so little.
