PS Elements 3 and print profiles - 09-02-2005, 08:29 PM

I use PS Elements 3 and would like to use Costco's printer profile, but I don't know if this is possible. I know, get better software. Does anyone know if this CAN be done with PSE? I have looked at drycreekphoto and downloaded Costco's glossy and lustre profiles. I attempted to calibate my monitor again. But the workflow on drycreekphoto refers to all these menu items I don't have.

I would like to edit my images and be able to see how Costco will interpret them. Generally I am happy with the prints, but sometimes they come out too dark and it is impossible to lighten them when I set my print order to color adjust. The one time I told them not to adjust, a few came out funky (the blues and greens). Most of them still came out great. When I calibrated my CRT tonight I changed the color temperature from 9000K to 6500K. It looks a bit warmer, but I think I am already getting used to it. I can't tell if the photos on my hard drive look much different. Seems like I am using a slightly lower contrast setting than before, also.

I dunno, maybe I have to fork over the bucks on software. I guess I can print a few test without the profile, turn off color adjust, and see how they turn out.

Suzy, I don't have PSE so I can't really help but I hate to see post go with no responses.

I will say that if you do much processing you won't regret getting the full version of Photoshop. Photoshop can do everything I have wanted to do to an image. It's a great piece of software.

You do know about the upgrade path that Adobe has to go from Elements to full Photoshop for $299, right?

Thanks for replying.... What version of PS do I get in that upgrade? I'll have to look online and see what the upgrade package is. Honestly, I can't spend the money right now. I just bought muslin and now I need to buy a stand for it, and I just spent money on materials and a booth trying to start a business, and now the first event I was going to have at George R. Brown has been canceled because of Hurricane Katrina. Early next year I will probably upgrade. This print profile stuff is the first big hurdle I have come to in 9 months of using PSE. It's been pretty good.

I looked at the Adobe site and the 299 upgrade offer appears to before cannon only. Here I am with a new Nikon, a older cannon p&s , none of which qualities, I think
Am I reading the Adobe deal wrong?

Do you have a link? I am looking at the pages on Adobe and PSE 3 and I don't see any offers.

Here's the link:

http://store.adobe.com/store/product...ml?id=catCanon

It's really only for upgrading PSE delivered with Canon products, but shhhhh, don't tell anyone, I used it to upgrade a PSE I had from another source. You get the full version of CS2 (when I took advantage of the offer it was CS) - not an upgrade - so you can install it fresh on a computer without having PSE installed.

Thanks for the link... I had been looking at the product info only, not in the store. The 300D came with PSE 2 so I guess I could use that one. This is tempting. I wonder how long the offer will be around. Thanks for the info!

Is the upgrade a download, or will they send a disc

They'll send a disk. The page says the offer is good until November 30, but in the past they've renewed the offer so it shouldn't expire.

Suzy,

IMO, your problem is not with PSE 3.0. I use it and find it great for prints, however, I do my own printing. I just recently had a problem with my prints that I was convinced was a software problem, not necessarily PSE 3.0. As a matter of last resort, I calibrated my monitor and, surprise surprise, that was it. Calibrating a monitor is a real pain to me and I don't do it unless absolutely necessary.

I don't think that moving up to CS will solve your problem. Just my opinion.

Bill

Thanks for your opinion, Bill. I have calibrated my monitor, and I plan to do some test prints with Costco by turning off their color adjust. Maybe it will do the trick. I don't know until I try. Most of them came out well even before calibrating.
