I Got My IR-Modified Canon 5D Today - 09-18-2008, 09:53 PM

FedEx delivered my rented, IR -modified camera today. It includes a sheet explaining a bit about IR photography. I thought the people on this forum might find the following paragraph interesting:

"Aperture: Contrary to common knowledge, your sharpest picture will usually occur at the widest, or 1 to 2 F-Stops from the widest, aperture setting. While small apertures give you the greatest depth of field, the small apertures also increase Lens Diffraction. Furthermore, any dust spots, IR glass imperfections will be much more visible. Our modified cameras are deisnged to work at all F-Stops. Only use small apertures if necessary.

"Exposure Compensation: Infrared data comes in primarily on the Red Channel. Because of this, cameras will sometimes over-expose the red channel. Try shooting with -1 or -2 stops of exposure compensation.

"White Balance: Try setting a custom white balance with a piece of white paper in outdoor sun. While this won't increase sensor resolution, it will give you close to a black and white picture."

Post some pictures.
I plan on having my 5D IR modified at latter date.
But you might question the Aperture statment above ...
Often usual best sharpness is more wide to middle like F/4 F/8 range
but it really depends on the lens you are using - which one are you using ???
Its actually more chromatic aberation than lens diffraction that reduces the "sharpness".

Does it have a built in filter ? if so which one ??
