photos are foggy!! YIKES!! - 10-24-2008, 10:18 PM

Okay, so recently I've been trying to master lens flare when the sun is setting in the evening. Today I was out shooting about 4:30-5:00 ( I know, a bit early) but anyway, I was trying to shoot my kids with some nice rim lighting and then thought I would try to get some with a bit of lens flare. My problem is that all the ones that I tried have this hazy/foggy look to them. It's horrible!!! Am I getting too much light into my sensor?? How do you do this?? If you need an example, let me know. I have plenty that I can load up pre-post work!! I'm not even going to try and work any of the shots, as they are "SHOT" in the literal meaning of the term :(

thanks.

Let's see an example. Most likely it's just too much sun...

Hazy and foggy?
They look pretty good to me, the unprocessed one is certainly acceptable, but the processed one is much better. The other one shows the effects of flare, maybe a smidge of camera movement or not precise focus, one of which you may be able to solve with a lens shade.

You aren't using an uncoated filter on the lens, are you?

In my experience, that's a risk you're going to run when shooting into the sun without a scrim or shade of some sort. When I do that, I try to have an assistant hold a reflector up off camera as a shade just enough to shade my front lens element. Sometimes, even your hand will work--you're just trying to shade the front of your lens. Not always possible, but when you can do it, it'll work.

Light coming into the lens like the kind of light that causes flare also reduces contrast. You can pull it back in post.
