What do you think of this? - 09-19-2005, 10:12 PM

My first hockey photo shooting experience left me a bit let down. I discovered I need a much quicker lens than I can afford. I guess I'll wait for the weekends where there's two games and try to rent something when I next feel the urge.

My question is about a bit of post-processing I've done on one of my (many) sub-par photos.

This is the original...

And here's what I did with it... (Basically just running a Lomo action and tweaking colors a bit)

What do you think? Does it salvage it in your opinion? I like the idea of the shot; the goalie looking down the ice. I just had poor execution.

Do you have Photoshop CS? If so I would take the original and use the Shadow/Highlight tool to boost the shadows. Then apply a curve to brighten the shadows some more. Finish up with some local contrast enhancement (USM at about 30, 50, 0) and the picture should be pretty good.

If you're using Photoshop CS2 try "image->adjustments->shadows/highlights". You'll need to play around with the settings some, but it may pull out the detail you're looking for.

I dunno, I like it. It's a bit artsy but I like what you did to it.

I sure like it better than the original.

Yeah, that's kinda what I was going for with my attempt to salvage it. I knew it wasn't realistic or anything. Just... different.

Wow, that's a HUGE improvement! I'll have to try this on the original 8mp file - I'd like to leave some of the face-off circle in the picture... I think it adds a little something, even if the ice is all blown out.

Thanks for the help!

WOW! You got "board"? Was that hit with a board or flat like a board? Watching that would make me "bored".

(Just giving you a hard time!)
