what's the best way to downsizing your image? - 09-20-2005, 04:34 PM

hi,

After getting really frustrated with loosing a lot of detail on this photo, I started to look for a good way to downsize my pictures for webuse without loosing detail or getting jagged edges.
As a photoshop cs user I looked at the different the different resampling techniques it had to offer:
-bilinear
-bicubic
-bicubic smoother
-bicubic sharper

I read that bicubic smoother was good for enlarging pictures without too much of detail loss and in the same article I read that bicubic sharper is best to use when downsizing images without loosing too much of detail.
So I tried it and yes the bicubic sharper resampling sure did a better job. But still I had the jagged edges (notice them on the steering wheel, the lines that are vertical).

So I read some more articles and found out that resizing in steps of -10% was a great way to downsize my picture. And so I tried and it helped a bit, but I kept the darnit jagged lines...

And once again my search continued, running through miles and miles of hits by google, I finally found another useful article. Subject: Pixels per inch! Why haven't I thought of that, I thought So I increased the pixels per inch from 72 to 300, and noticed it got a bit sharper indeed. But no, after resizing my image in steps of 10% at a time, I still saw the jagged lines.

And now I come to you! Can I get some good photos online without too much loss of detail and without jagged lines or is it practically impossible to achieve this when resizing the images this much?

Thank you in advance,

Frank

The way I understand it: Bicubic Smoother for upsizing and Bicubic Sharper for downsizing.

But I use the new FM SI Pro it seems to work very well for upsizing and downsizing.
I could not see much difference between it and Genuine Fractals and it is a lot cheaper
