Phot websites - 12-27-2008, 05:15 PM

I am wanting some input about photo sharing websites. I am looking for one that I can upload my photos to share (don't mind paying a fee). I would like to be able to sub categorize my photos (landscape, crosses, etc...) and password protect only certain categories such as family photos but leave open the others.

Does a website like this exist? If not what is the next best one?

Thanks for your input.

Robert

Another vote for smugmug. Plus, they are sponsors here and very quick with the customer service questions. I have a pro account and was looking around just to see if there was a better deal out there. I couldn't find anything being offered by another site that smugmug couldn't do for me. I just re-signed for another year.

Thanks so much for the replies.... There are so many out.

One more thing about smugmug. It said in some of the reading that You cant right click and save to another sight. I guess That means they have pretty good security as far as not getting your pictures stolen. I am just wondering since they seem to encourage uploading full size images.

Again thanks so much for your replies

Check out http://orbnetworks.com or http://www.cloudfireit.com

Both of these tools allow you to share photos and other files right from your computer so you don't have to worry about uploading anything!

Cheers,

Rene

You can set different levels of protection on your photos. When I do tfp shoots, I upload full size images into a password protected gallery, with NO watermark, and allow Right-click to download. I then set the largest size I want anyone to be able to see. Once the models have downloaded their photos, I Disable right clicking, enable watermarks, and disable the password so anyone can view the images.

You can also make galleries totally invisible to visitors, with or without password protection.

Needless to say, I'm another fan of SmugMug. My account re-ups this month.

Another vote for Smugmug.
Also Exposure Manager is another viable option.
I like Smugmug's support and hence switched from EM to SM.

Thanks for the answers. I opened up a smugmug account last night rhphotography.smugmug.com added a few photos to see how it works, Protected my family images and left the rest to view. So far I like it.

Again thanks for all the help

This isn't a smugmug shortcoming, it can happen with any of the providers, but the unfortunate truth is that disabling right click -save as isn't a very strong security measure. There are readily available ways around this . You're better off watermarking your images for protection.

Smugmug does allow you to upload full resolution images and limit visitors to see only the largest size of your choosing i.e. small, medium, large, XL, etc up to "original". With this in mind I don't see any reason not to upload the full versions since it's a nice way of having an additional backup of your photos in addition to having them available for larger prints if needed.
