All by Ansel Adams:

The Negative
400 Photographs
EXAMPLES The Making of 40 Photographs

All of the above took on greater meaning when I had the good fortune to see several of the original prints from these 3 books.

Don't ask about Cowboy Kate. I got a copy for Christmas last year. Mrs. Wayne asked me to return it. I did. Traded it for a copy of the latest version of The Negative.

Coyboy Kate & Other Stories by Sam Haskins is a great book.

Professional Portrait techniques by Kodak

Minimalist photography by Kirk Tuck

Beginner's Guide to Photography by Ralph Hattersly.

IMO, one of the best basic introductions to photography available. Out of print: Published 1974. Got my copy on 'da Bay. Not a lot of metaphysics, just good, understandable info. Film, tho. (digital wasn't invented back then. see Photography, Archaic.) Fundamentals that are very applicable to any area of photography.

Hattersly was adamant about avoiding "gut busting": reading so much that it overwhelms us, and interferes with doing... the only way to perfect our skills.

Not too much else, in 2008...I was just too busy doing stuff!

For magazines, I like
- Black and White Photography (UK)
- Lenswork
- View Camera (just ordered, haven't gotten first issue yet)

Books:
- 400 Photographs - Ansel Adams
- The Camera - Ansel Adams
- EXAMPLES The Making of 40 Photographs - Ansel Adams
- Recollections - John Sexton
- Cape Light - Joel Meyerowitz
- Alfred Steiglitz, Photographs and Writings
- The Photograph: Composition & Color Design by Harald Mante (not quite as enthusiastic about this one as John though)
- Creative Authenticity, Ian Roberts
- The Photographer's Eye, Michael Freeman (a good presentation of composition, but the photography left me cold)
- The Photographer's Eye, John Szarkowski (a bit over-rated if you ask me)

New for 2009, got these but haven't read them yet:
- Perception and Imaging, Richard Zakia (just started, very good so far and a much more pleasant read than Mante)
- The Printed Picture, Richard Benson (only skimmed so far, looks interesting)
- Color and Meaning, John Gage (started it, got bored with it, not sure if I'll finish it anytime soon)

Careful Jeff! You keep reading all of those books relating to obsolete methods and materials and you just might find yourself lusting to create some silver gelatine photographs.
