Lens and Detail - 01-06-2009, 05:32 PM

Ok stay with me on this one:

If I take a picture an object from 5 feet away with a 10mm lens and fill the lens from point A to B then I take another picture of the same object from 10 feet away with a 20mm lens and fill the lens from point A and B (that point being the same as the first one) would the 10mm shot have more detail since I was closer or are they the same?

I may be off on the distance needed to have the same angle on the lens but you get my point.

Thanks,
Robert

You should try it. I would think the closer shot would show more detail since you'd have more dof.

I will when my new Canon 10-22 gets here tomorrow.

I was just wondering if anyone had already tried it.

If I said Yes, there would be those who would say I was wrong. If I said NO, there would be those who would say I was wrong.
If you try it yourself with your new lens, you can tell us all.

I don't know.

I do know. Us a bigger sensor and you will get more detail. Laws of Phsyics apply.

There will be differences between the two photos that are far more significant than the amount of detail captured (perspective and DOF are two of them).

Come one someone make up the answer... I'm sure someone can claim to be the authority. If all things are equal, same camera, equal quality glass and lens. I'd have to think there would be no difference in detail but perspective should change.

There it is.

Shucks he beat me to it.

I think he's saying the closer you are the shallower your DOF.

Is shallower a word?

I don't think your question is answered by explaining Depth of focus, but would be more accurately described as a difference in light falling on the sensor being more directed on one lens than another.

But, DOF is definitely interesting and HERE is an interesting description.

the closer you get to the sunject, with any lens, the shallower the dof.

for all practical purposes, in your example post,
it appears to be a reasonably small difference, for a given (same) f stop.
that dof calculator site is my best friend :) I sure cant remeber that inof very well...

gee i think that's correct

robert I do belive that anytime you choose a closer distance to fill the frame is better than using a longer lens to make up for the distance.

Just an opinion of course, but considering we (certainly not me) cant all afford the super-awesomer $3K+ long prime glass, getting closer is better :)
