Any tips on taking school pictures? - 01-16-2009, 02:16 PM

I've been asked to do the school photos for the little church school my daughter attends. It's grades 1-8, only 22 students plus two teachers and an aide. Great way to practice my indoor portrait skills.

Is there a place where you can upload them to do color correction, order packages with envelopes, etc?

Any tips on lighting, posing, etc? I have three backdrops: black, white, and a mottled grey and two umbrellas. Any pointers would be great.

Have you ever used the new Photoshop express website, it interlinks with facebook, flickr, etc. Allows for a pretty decent post posting, the ability to share images and download content. Ordering pictures through it are branches off to shutterfly. Pretty neat, not really sure this is what your looking for but it works well for me. www.photoshop.com Check it out it's free. On lighting, I take it that you're familiar with strobes and such since you mentioned umbrellas. Suggest main light and fill light. Not sure exactly what you have for equipment and your experience levels. I've reviewed your website and you seem to have a talent for posing. Love the Frame and family pics. I have a 16 year old and from the school pics that he's brought home are really simple. In my opinion are a little odd on posing. Again, from what I've seen on your website you'll do well. Good luck and be sure to share the results. I'm sure someone will ping in with more experience and give you a few more pointers.

I shoot mainly Military poses that are pretty much all the same, headshot at a 45 degree angle, American flag in backdrop etc.....Good Luck. If I can help let me know.

Another free website that host printing through several vendors is PICASA-google it. Great Free program that I really like alot. From there you can order.

I didn't see any indoor images except for the wedding on your blog, so I assume you have only shot outside. You need to practice and become familiar with setting up your lights properly before you take on a school. Your gray background would be best.

I like your blogspot you have very nice photo's. I don't think you will have any problems. Sounds like you are moving in the right direction. Taking on a small school is a good thing.

Wade-I looked at the photoshop site. cool, but it looks like a customer could easily just download the photos for free. Was there a site protection aspect I missed?

It's not really a site for operating a business, the neat thing I like about this is that it will import from facebook, flickr, facebook. Allows for an on the road editing feature using aspects of photoshop techniques. The only problem I have with it, is it seems to be slower than normal websites. It's still in a beta phase so the protection feature you're inquiring about I'm really not sure about. I have a paid pro site I use through lifepics that works well with water marks and protection, ordering, password protect events, etc. It's only 50.00 per year and you can upload-password protect events, list price to your desire. Proably one of the cheapest ways to operate a small business that I'm aware of. It's a branch off of Wolfe Camera/Ritz (http://ritzpixblog.com/rpp/) or direct to Website: lifepics.com. I've had this for about 2 years and love it. Later you can fund your own website and use this as a branch off for ordering photo's.
