Here is the same image after some corrections (color balance mainly) and NOISE NINJA! I think this little plug in is 100% worth it... I filtered out the noise without loosing the subtle detail of the spines!

Definite improvement, although I don't think the noise is too awful on the first one.

Nice shot btw.

I've got it installed, but I still haven't bothered to try figuring out how to use it! Glad someone does! :P

As I recall this software comes in a variety of costs, what one did you buy? At what stage of processing do you use it ?
This photo is very clean, good work

This photo is very clean, good work | It cost me about 80 bucks or so... I just get the PS2 plugin.
I use to use it at the beginning of the processing. Theoretically, in that way, you're not processing noise and artifacts. But since I just bought it, I am aplying it to my old already-processed pics with good results as well!
Have a good day!

I've tried noise ninja, and thought it did a pretty good job as a one-button fix, but I use Neat Image now and have forever. The nice thing about neat image is that they have noise profiles prebuilt for most cameras which are very good. Not sure if ninja lets you do that, but since I started using the custom profiles, image noise is almost a null issue.

Actually, Noise Ninja has prebuilt profiles based on various camera models as well.

Well in the above example, Neat Image looks better...but you should never use any noise reduction filter in its default settings since it usually has a too extreme or too little effect.
The real test is to load the custom profile for your camera and redo the noise reduction. That way you can look at a tuned effect and compare.

Anybody else use either one, and their recommendations. I was actually going to search our archive for noise programs. I'm glad someone made it easy for me.

I use NeatImage, with a custom profile built using their calibration image run through my camera then loaded into the program.
It's superb software.
Have found that resizing a cleaned-up image can produce banding and other artifacts, so I always process images after I'm finished with Photoshop.
My version reads, but then strips the exif data, which is strange.

I use Neat Image as well (Home Edition 5.0). Great software particularly when you've had to shoot at ISO 1600 or 3200. I always use it before any Photoshop PP and have never had any issues with banding or other artifacts. It's batch processing is quite handy. And although it's slower, I usually let it auto profile each image individually... though I pick the level of noise reduction applied. There's a lot of tweaks within the settings, so it pays to find out what works best with the particular photo or group of photos you're going to clean up.
