Question Depth of Field ideas? - 09-28-2005, 11:07 PM

In my Photo I class our assignment is Depth of field. We have to have 4 different scenes with at least 3 things one front, middle, far away and take each shot 3 times with different apertures. and I have to have 40 shots in all. it also has to be done outdoors. I need some ideas for scenes if anyone has any please post your suggestions. Thanks!!

Try a golf course. With trees, sand traps and the pin you can get the DOF shots you need.

Just a thought.

The pin is the pole with the flag on it that sticks out of the hole. :)

For something closer in, if you could find three flowers in a flowerbed, that would look cool, too.

I'm sure you already know this but it's worth mentioning. Distance to the subject plays an important role in depth of field - the closer you are the less depth of field. Aperture isn't the only thing.

thanks for the ideas!!

This is our very first photo assignment and it is most just to see that we can change the aperture and to see what one scene looks like with 3 different apertures. Though creativity in the shots in a bonus and will get me a better grade which I am hoping for...

I had to so this same assignment for a class.....would show you but it was on slides...and I don't have a slide scanner :) But my favorite was of three large leaves, taped to a table so they were all at the same angle (but compose so you can't see tape or table)- about 4 or 5 inches apart, used 100 mm and was about ...4 or 5 ft away....I'm not sure how exact all of these numbers are, it's been a while. :)

You might try the poles of a fence... find a piece of land that is surrounded by poles and wires. you can take photo's of the different wires and the different poles.

Or you might wanna try a intersection with different trafficlights or cars.

You want me to go on?

Good luck with your assignment!

Frank

I was teaching myself about DOF and I found that a good exercise is shooting rows of dominoes in perspective ;-)

Maybe IU'm still feeling the effects of Rita, but what about cars in traffic???
a long line of cars with different DOF angles would be pretty interesting

the only thing im afraid of with doing moving subjects is that I wouldnt be able to get in the 3 shots with the different apertures in time before they moved.

I am also going to be attempted to take engagements pictures of my sis and her fiance so I thought I might be able to use some of those.

And also at the time I don't have a tripod...I was supposed to get my bf's last weekend when I was home but forgot, so I might have to buy one this weekend and I was wondering how much they cost?

Hmm, no tripod ok try a bean bag and a bar stool or a wall to steady yourself or just hand hold them.

Tripods are like anything elses you get what you pay for.

You can get a cheap one at wal-mart for around 20 bucks which is better than nothing.

But one thing to consider is how much you have invested in your camera body and glass and how much your gear weighs and make sure it can support that weight easily.

a gust of wind can push your stuff over and cost you alot of $$ and the cheaper ones tend to be light but it is better than nothing.

If you can get one with a hook to hang your bag on to add some weight to avoid that situation.
