In my last visit to Houston in Herman Park I took some snapshots of some of the flowers in the garden. All handheld... nothing spectacular in bloom either.
The pictures and composition are very sub-par and snapshot looking which I'm eager to improve on so I was wondering what some of you guys focus on for a decent composition. Is the center always the best (of the flower, like eyes on portraits)? Bump up the aperture if I want more in focus? Do you every focus on certain petals? Since I just used the 50mm I guess a lot of these questions apply to a more zoomed lens; I have yet to purchase a macro lens too.
It was very windy so I was using manual focus of course and shutter priority most of the time set to 1/125. I think a lot are soft.... should I have bumped the shutter up even more to get sharper? Manual mode with smaller aperture and higher ISO maybe as well? Also, is it soft because the small DOF and not being in focus or because of the shutter or both? Or are there other things affecting it in addition to those?

Thanks for reading and any C&C appreciated. Sorry for the read and similarity to other C&C threads picture wise.
P.S. - still learning and reading a lot about the recently acquired camera
