Another great pod cast by Brooks Jenson, editor of LensWork.

The So-called Normal Lens

"I was originally taught that a "normal lens" is normal because it reproduces the way we normally see. Hogwash. I tend to define my lenses not by the focal length distance, but rather by the distance I want to create between me and my subject. "

"The market wants a Leica to be a Leica: the inheritor of tradition, the subject of lore, and indisputably a mark of status to own."

Based on what you quoted, that's the way I tend to think.

I listened to the podcast and I'm not seeing his point? Given the terms he discussed "wide", "normal", etc...if you understand photography, you recognize the importance of the origin of the terms from a perspective/mathematical (as he says) standpoint. Those terms won't stop a photographer that knows he wants from getting the effect he wants.

This is almost like people who claim using the term "fast lens" is a misnomer. I guess the enthusiasm of photographers always prompts discussion of *some* sort.
