Water Dripping - 10-01-2005, 03:17 PM

Can anyone explain how to set up to catch a water drop falling into water. I have seen some pretty cool shots where the water looks blue or red, etc. Any help would be great.

It's easier than you think...

Setup
1. Sink
2. Colored bowl
3. Camera on a tripod
4. Flash

Execution
1. Fill up the bowl to the desired level with water. Put the bowl in the sink under the faucet arm.
2. Setup the camera and aim down at an angle so that the you see the surface of the water with the color of the bowl behind it.
3. Turn on the faucet until you are getting a drip every few seconds.
4. Fire away...you will have to work on your timing, but it gets easier as you play.

One thing to keep in mind is that you don't need a macro lens to do this. I got a few nice ones using my 28-135.

Get creative. You don't have to use a bowl...you can use the sink itself (follow my link) or a shot glass (84netgal has a few nice ones in her blog).

Here's my shot using the divider between my sinks:

Hope that helps.

Be prepared to shoot a LOT of photos trying to get it right. :)

Great job! I really like that 3rd photo. A bit noisy, but the 3 connected drops is really unique.

I actually added the noise. I like how the overall image turned out when I added a ton of sharpening to it.

What shutter speed do you use to freeze the droplets?
Or is it just a poop load of sharpening?
Or both!

The catch lights in the first shot are very cool....nice work!
How many shots did it take you to get some you liked?

I took 101 pics, I still have several that are usable and I might try to print some at 20X30. I think that would look awsome.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but I just read this a few nights ago and wanted to try it. Just so happened last night that there was a large pot in the kitchen sink. It was soaking after having been used to cook chicken in. The oily / greasy look of the water attracted me, and this is one of the better ones I came up with.

I realize it's kind of dark, but I still really like it.
