Gotta agree with Thomas. Strobist is the way to go specially for newbies who don't like to read books hehehe.
I'm a hands-on person. The Strobist Lighting 101 and 102 really showed me how to properly light things using inexpensive gear and I even had a chance to build my own gear like softboxes, grids, snoots, and more...
Melanie, don't feel overwhelmed. Start with the Lighting 101 stuff. And if you still feel the same way, don't hesitate to ask questions on their forum like TPF they have a lot f outstanding folks who are more than eager to help out.
