Flush mounting to something thick? - 02-21-2009, 09:13 AM

I'm not really a fan of framing and matting. My home is pretty modern. If anything I use the plainest black frame I can find. This time I want to flush mount this image to something thick, maybe about an inch thick. I was thinking of using MDF (spray painted black) and just spray mounting it.
It would be kinda heavy though. It's 13"x19".
Canvas gallery wrap is too expensive.
Any other ideas?

if you're not apposed to paying to have this done, you could have it made into a "standout print". Mpix as well as many others offer this. ...and it's light too. Not sure of the pricing, but fairly certain it'd be cheaper than canvas.

Those are beautiful, exactly the look I want. But unfortunately they are priced very similar to gallery wraps. $70 for an image this size. I don't need this to last forever so I can't justify the cost. I already printed it off my Epson 2400, so I just need to figure out an inexpensive mounting solution. Thanks for the suggestion though! I'm going to keep that in mind for future use.

I've seen foamcore in black, with white or black core, a couple of layers and you're at 1' or whatever floats the boat. iirc it wasn't glossy, but it was black....

It's possible you could create your own mount with some matte and a blank canvas of the size you want and laminate it all to get a similar look to the standout print. An MDF that size would weigh a ton unless you routed out most of the back material. Both options are something to consider.

There is 1/2" black foam core. I think if you glue 2 of them together and then glue your beautiful print you will get almost the same look. We do this at church but with only one layer of the foam for certain promotional stuff in our bulletin wall it looks pretty cool.

You found Nemo!

Mounted under a giant plain pane of glass would be pretty cool, and kind of evoke the look of an aquarium. But that might not be the look you want, and it could get expensive and heavy real fast.
