Wow! Thanks for this step-by-step information. I had no idea how to do all of that. I don't usually do much to my photos since I do photojournalism, but it is very good information to have. I would never have known where to even start to do retouching like this. I can't even operate the dodge and burn tools very well. Thanks!

You're welcome, Leslie...

I just experiment and play around a lot with PS-CS. Also I have read a couple of books that have been invaluable in my growth in photoshop. I have found often times, that taking a picture with good exposure, composition, and focus gets you only half way from making a good image.

While the old addage "garbage in - garbage out" holds true in photography, I have found that good post-processing can sometimes make a good picture great.

I appreciate your comments,
-christian.

Can you list any of the books you've read and found helpful?

I agree. I have had some pictures that I thought were pretty good, but after having a friend of mine do some dodging and burning on them (black and whites), I was amazed at the difference. They looked 100% better. I just hope to be able to master the dodging and burning thing.

I find The Photoshop CS Book for Digital Photographers by Scott Kelby to be very useful. I am seldom in PhotoShop without this book spread across my lap. Easy for the beginner to follow with advanced tips to allow room to grow.

Have fun,
Greg

I have the book that Greg is referring to... in fact, many of the techniques I use come from this particular book. I would also like to add one more:

Adobe Photoshop CS: The Art of Photographing Women by Kevin Ames

I also use this book from time to time:

Adobe Photoshop CS for Photographers by Martin Evening.

Hope this helps,
-christian.
