Blue Bonnet Tips - 03-15-2009, 10:42 PM

Last year I got lucky and went out on a cloudy day. Not sure if I will be so lucky this time. If I can't find shade anyone got some tips on shooting in sun light. I am going to try and head out in the late afternoon. Also if anyone know a good spot. I was thinking of heading to brenam.

fill flash or reflectors to minimize the harsh shadows, don't shoot in midday try to go in the late afternoon to get that rich golden light

So put the sun behind them and use fill flash or a reflector. I am also trying to shoot on manual more.

One more idea...fwiw...Find some translucent material; white rip-stop nylon comes to mind. 45" wide, by 2 yards long. Buy 4 yards, cut in half and sew together. That will give you ~90 in. by 72 in., depending upon seams.

That will make a dandy light modifier, creating instant open shade. It is light, easy to carry, and with a few of those little metal clips that office supply stores carry and some paracord, and/or a willing assistant, can be set up most anywhere, for lowered contrast and photoing on the most beautiful, no-cloud-in-the-sky days, even at high noon. Add a smidge of fill flash for a bit of sparkle to the image.

Set it up, dial the camera to full auto, and FEAR NOT! Just kidding about full auto...no photog worth his monopod would do that, right?

Only if they think their camera is infallible.

Not many Blues in the DFW area yet and they may be sparse because of the draught until last weeks deluge of 3+ inches.

Also if you can't afford a photo reflector look around the department stores automotive section for car windshield reflectors some come in highly reflective material while others are pretty flat and it will always be with you in your car and you have that second use. (you can then always attach some white or black light weight material to the backside of them and get 3 reflectors in one for uner $10.

One of my favorite places to shoot bluebonnets is at the old German homestead, just inside Marble Falls, on Hwy. 281. The property is pretty good-sized, and sometimes the cattle are out grazing in field among the wildflowers... Very nice!!

Brenham and around there was pretty good last year. And a lot of traffic was out as well.

I saw young Bluebonnets by the highway yesterday. Not much to shoot yet though. How are they around Brenham, anyone been there yet?

This site helped me last year. I found a spot out in the middle of no where with tons of blue bonnets.
http://lnstar.com/wildflowers/sightings.htm

My poor son had just started walking and wasn't thrilled about being set in a giant patch of blue bonnets.

Sounds awesome!! Just googled it though and its over 3 hours away. If my son was happier for long car rides I might try. Last year we drove about an hour to find a good spot but totally worth it!

Alright I called and they said they are in full bloom in Brenam but that it might be even better by the end of this week beginning of next

They are a foot high and mixed with paintbrush on Hwy 6 south of Navasota.

Yikes! For some reason I was thinking you were in the Austin area. That would be a bit of a drive with a little one, and then have to drive all that way back home again. I've never been to Brenham during Bluebonnet season. I've heard it's really nice... and Independence too. Someday I hope to get out there & see for myself

Loved the photos of your little boy! Too cute!!
