Would a higher aperture made the flowers in the front and still blured the background?

I am hoping Tracy teaches me how to get rid of the bandaid on saturday

Yeah, I think it would have helped. Still a nice shot. You can tweak some stuff in PS if you want a different look.

Melissa,

Interesting flowers, where did you shoot that? I was thinking about taking my little girl out but don't know a good flower patch.

using the dof calc, (using your focal length of 44, assuming 10ft away) the dof for 5.6 was about 3.32ft, whereas f8 would have given you 4.82ft...

so, just depends on how much more you want in focus, although the higher the f, the more in focus the flowers in front would be too...

You are not going to believe this. I found this dinner patch in Sugar land. If you go to Oyster Creek park. Park where you would go for the fountains and creek. You know the bring you walk over and you see the turtles. Walk over the bridge and then go to your right. Go down the trail and right where the power lines are is a tiny patch of blue bonnets. =) I was so exited we were there to walk and found them.

Nothing wrong with isolating your subject in the middle of OOF areas in front of and hehind the subject. DOF is always biased toward the rear of the plane of sharp focus. In other words, if total DOF is 4 feet, at least 3 feet will be behind the subject. Closing the aperture may have little or no effect on DOF nearer the lens.

In your picture, the flowers behind your subject are in focus. Nothing wrong with cute band-aids on kids. Stuff happens. There is something wrong, to my eyes, with the weeds growing out of her head.

If I were to do that shot over, I would avoid the clutter behind her head. I would try larger and smaller apertures to vary DOF. Pick the best of the lot.

Good luck.

It's always easier to remove the bandaid , then take the picture, then replace the band aid.
The face scratch would be easier to remove than this bandaid.

But, it's not impossible. Took about 5 minutes.

Oh great, now I'll have even more clients wanting retouching done for pennies. "Gosh, it only took you 5 minutes." ....yeah, and 30 years of experience.

The secret is to not charge by the time taken, but by the results needed.

That'll be $100.00 please......

Don't remove the bandaid.
It adds interest.

IMHO

Tom is right about removing the band-aid first.

FOR SALE:
One used BandAid
This BandAid was only used to cover a small facial scratch on a very cute
young lady. Carefully removed so as not to harm the subject or the BandAid.

Make offer.
